Simon Davidson (1853-1923) came to America from Russia with his parents, Isaac Davidson (1817-1912) and Dora (née Gittleson) Davidson (?-?), whom we are still trying to find. The Davidsons settled initially in Providence, Rhode Island, but Simon, a peddler, eventually moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts, where he established S. Davidson Clothing, a business in which he supplied goods and materials to whaling ships that left from New Bedford harbor. (His brother, Joseph Davidson, moved to Newport, Rhode Island, where he lived until his death in 1903). Simon also took a wagon to Providence and sold dry goods to make a living. He married Jennie Betsy Simansky Davidson (1854-1917), and together they had approximately 17 children, nine of whom lived to adulthood, with a tenth missing information as to his whereabouts. After his wife's death from Alzheimer's disease in 1917, Simon met and married Sophie Bella Selinger (1857-1939), who survived him. Simon was visiting one of his daughters in Providence when he died of heart failure on 2 November 1923. He is buried in Tifereth Israel, one of two Jewish cemeteries in the city of New Bedford, near his first wife and his second.

He and Jennie were the parents of the following children who lived to adulthood:

Mark Davidson (1877-c.1950)
Louis Davidson (1879-1947)
Betsey "Bessie" Davidson Morrin (1885-1962)
Philip Davidson (1889-1948)
Anna Davidson Fletcher Quinn (1884-1925)
Izabella "Bella" Davidson Galvan White (1891-1968)
Dora Davidson Shein (1876-1947)
Lizzie Davidson (1896-c.1923)
Lillian Davidson Eckstein (1898-1969)

At least four of his and Jennie's children that we know of, died either stillborn or as infants, and their places of burial are unknown at this time (2011). They are:

Isaac Davidson (1877-?)
an unnamed "Female" Davidson (1881-1881)
Abraham Davidson (1882-1882)
Max Davidson (1883-1884?).

Simon and Jennie are my great-great-grandparents. May they both rest in peace.
