Eugenia Phillips was the daughter of wealth and privilege. Born in Charleston, SC and raised in the Jewish faith. Her sister was Phoebe Pember who became a matron of the Confederate Hospital Chimborazo in Richmond. Eugenia married Phillip Phillips in 1836. Mr Phillips was a prominent attorney in Mobile, AL. After the marriage they moved to Mobile, AL. He was elected to the Alabama State Legislature in 1844. He was a staunch Unionist.Eugenia was a staunch Secessionist.
They moved to Washington, DC where he practiced law. Eugenia became friends with Rose Greenhow, the famous Confederate spy. In 1861 Eugenia was held under house arrest at the home of Rose Greenhow along with her husband and two daughters. Her husband was quickly cleared but Eugenia and her daughters were held for a bit longer. Her husband used his influence with Edwin M Stanton, the Secretary of War. They were released and transported South to Richmond. Mrs Phillips gave maps and other information to Jeff Davis on a visit to his home. The family moved to first Savannah, GA and then to New Orleans, LA. Mrs Phillips was again arrested by General "Beast" Butler for supposedly laughing during a Union funeral procession. She stated she had been laughing because she was at a childs birthday party and something amusing had occured. She was sent to Ship Island off the coast of Gulfport, Mississippi. Her health began to fail and she was released to her family. The family then moved to Georgia, where they stayed for the remainder of thier lives.
