Younger brother of Heinrich & Justus Laun.
Died of a stroke at the home of his brother-in-law, Frank Scherf at Newberg, Orgeon where he and Christina had gone several months to spend part of the winter. Member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for nearly 50 years.
Ewald was 6'-3 1/2" tall & 385 lbs!! with strength beyond belief . It is true that he was illiterate; his mother took him out of school, because he was a head taller than his classmates, and was cruelly mocked. He could do complex numbers in his head, and was far from stupid. Each of his children received $5,000.00 when they married. (This was enough to buy 160 acres of choice farm land) At one time Ewald owned over 600 acres. On the other hand, Ewald had a terrible German accent, and was often ridiculed because he used German grammar, when he spoke English. Most people in Charles City were bi-lingual , and had no problem with what he said. Ewald was agreat supporter of education, and they always had a school teacher living as their guests. (ie: Sarah White-Laun & Edwin Reed). I know that Clara, Emma, William, and probably others, attended the German College, in Charles City. Chuck studied Medicine at Iowa City.
(Thanks to Dick Laun for the information).
Married Christina Wilhelmina Fredrika Scherf June 2, 1873.
had eight children:
