Appointed clerk of US Court in Mississippi and US Marshal for that state. Instigator of a bloodless duel between himself and Senator Laupar. Appointed Marshal of territory in Utah by President Rutherford B. Hayes. Became a wealthy miner when he returned to NY. first wife died in New York; Wall Street investor. Lost much money in some investments; married again to Winifred K. Kimball of Salt Lake; they were divorced. Member of the Legion of Honor. Birthdate has also been noted to be August 13, 1843 unsure which is correct.
