A daughter of Philo and Julia (Sweet) Hurlbut, her father was an early pioneer of De Kalb Township, coming to the area in 1805 with his future father-in-law, Capt. Joshua Sweet and settling next to one another on the southeast portion of Lot 140, which was a portion of the township later annexed to form the town of De Peyster. While census records make it appear her family moved, occupied the same land until at least 1845.
Aurilla was the wife of John R. Burnham. As of the 1860 census, she and her husband were residing at De Peyster with son Milton and daughter Mary E. Burnham. They were still at De Peyster as of the next census, but by 1880 had gone to De Kalb where they were living with their daughter Mary E. (Hiram) McCullough and family. Her daughter’s family later moved to Heuvelton, where Aurilla passed away.
