A renowned Orientalist, historian and professor of archeology, he studied in Holland within the Franciscan Province of Oud-Ehrenstein and in Rome at the Collegio Antonianum. He served at the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum in Jerusalem as professor between 1928 and 1963, director of studies from 1932 until 1938, librarian and co-author with Friar Donato Baldi of an atlas of the Bible.
He also wrote a guidebook of the Holy Land and numerous articles, mostly in the 'Liber Annuus', 'Revue Biblique' and 'La Terre Sainte'. Lemaire died at Jerusalem on April 19, 1962, at the age of 65, and was buried at the Gethsemane.
