If you look at the full size picture of the top of the stone, you can make out most of WILLIAM JR. This poses something of a quandry, as this is assumed to be William born 1873 shown living with his assumed father James Madison Shasteen in the 1880 census.
There is no known reason for the stone to carry JR unless it was in relation to James Madsion Shasteen's younger brother William who was born in 1829 who had no son named William. Or to his assumed brother Jackson (b 1826) Shasteen's son William L Shasteen b 1860.
His mother Nancy Jane Butler Shasteen had passed in 1878 at the age of 47 of consumption. Her grave has not been located, but may very well be at teh West Jefferson Cemetery also without a stone.
