Son of Archibald McGirt II and Susanna McLean
Malcom McGirt died of typhoid pneumonia at Fort Caswell NC during the Civil War while serving in the Army of the Confederate States of America. He enlisted in August 1861 and died 3 months later in Nov 1861.
Gravestone lists his birth date as 18 Oct 1829, but it cannot be correct if his sister Barbara's birth date of 15 Mar 1830 is correct. Either Malcom was born in 1828 or Barbara was born in 1831. The 1850 and 1860 census records both state Malcom was born in 1829 as does his Confederate military enlistment records. However, five census records state that Barbara was born in 1830!

Confederate State of America (CSA) military record transcriptions:
Malcom McGirt - Private - Enlisted August 21, 1861 for 1 year
3rd Artillery ( 40 State Troops) N.C. - Capt . M. McNair's Company (Scotch Grey's Artillery) North Carolina Volunteers

Company Muster Roll Sept 25-Oct 31 - Present
When Paid: Pay Due from Enrollment

Company Muster Roll Nov. & Dec 1861
When Paid: Pay Due from enrollment
Remarks: Died Nov 28 in hospital at Fort Caswell, N.C. of typhoid pneumonia
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Malcom McGirt posed some interesting genealogical questions over the years but definitive proof was found that he is the son of Archibald McGirt II and his wife, Susanna McLean and NOT the son of Duncan McGirt and Elizabeth McLean as previously assumed and as previously published in some McGirt family history documents. Confederate Civil War records concerning his death and death benefit list his mother as "Susan McGirt" and a deposition by Susan McGirt filed in Robeson County 6 Dec 1862 states she is his mother and that he leaves no widow or child. The records were located in June 2008 at the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh NC.
