Abel Cooper Armstrong was born in Rutland county, Vermont, March 21, 1820. He came to Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1855 and moved to Poweshiek county on the last day of that year, settling first in Deep River. In 1879 he moved to Grinnell and had made his home there continuously since that time.

During the days of his active life he was engaged in the coal business, being interested in two yards, one at the present location of Willson & Hastings and the other at the crossing of Fifth Avenue and the M. & St. L. tracks. He had been an active member of the Odd Fellows since 1846.

He is survived by his wife and four children, H.G. Armstrong, Mrs. W.C. Hastings and Mrs. J.W. Robinson all of Grinnell, and Mrs. Sylvester Williams of Springfield, VT.
