John Bowers/Bauer was born in Wurtemberg, Germany. He immigrated to the United States with his father, Killiam Bauer sometime between 1837-1841 and lived in Baltimore, Maryland. He was married to Philippina Bowers. He had two daughters Mary Bowers and Katie Bowers and he adopted his sister, Margaret Bauer Folk children ,Philippina and John, after she was killed when her clothes caught fire(her story is in her bio). He served during the Civil War in the Navy as a 1st class Fireman from Jan. 27, 1862 until June 12, 1864. He died of skin cancer on the face.

The Knights of St. Paul Father Kolping Counell , Catholic Benevolent Legion and Department of Maryland, Grand Army of the Republic, will attend the funeral. The brass band of the Knights of St. Paul will play the funeral march. The pallbearers will be members of the Dodge Post.
Besides his widow Mrs. Phillipina Bowers is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Katie Chambers, two grandchildren and three gr-grandchildren.
