There is confusion on the identity of this man. The cemetery records have been burned. There were several James Shasteens that served in the Civil War. There were two likely candidates from Yellowbud.

James C. Shasteen, son of James (Robert's son) and Eleanor Shasteen, born Nov 1834 d Sep 1906 in Piatt Co., IL. and has a gravesite and non military stone in Bement Cemetery, Piatt Co., IL. He is believed to have served in this unit with his brother Francis Marion Shasteen and cousins Edward and Lewis Clark, sons of William Shasteen (William is also Robert's son). James C. moved to the Piatt Co., IL area at about the same time as Edward and Lewis Clark.

James Shasteen, son of James (Robert's brother) and Martha Shasteen, born 1824 d Feb 1871 of consumption of the lungs per Ross Co. death records.

Military information on the soldier indicates his age was 27 when he enlisted on 8/7/1862 as a Private (therefore born 1835). He mustered into Co K 89th Ohio Infantry on 8/26/1862 and on 9/20/1864 transferred into VRC (Veteran Reserve Corps - indicating he needed recovery time before returning to duty). This would more closely agree with the James C. birth in Nov 1834 than with the James birth in 1824.

The stone was ordered 11 Jul 1893 from Gross Bros Lee Mass but there is no indication of who ordered the stone nor any identification of the soldier beyond what is on the stone.

For the time being, I am assuming this is the stone of James C. Shasteen 1834-1906 based on having seen many stones placed for deceased Civil War soldiers in family plots with no body and because the circumstantial evidence points to James C. The likely story is that an attempt was made to place stones for all soldiers in the community by a member of the community and the death record of James 1824-1871 was mistaken for the soldier James C. 1834-1906. It does seem odd that his brother William Henry Harrison Shasteen (WHHS) lived in the community at the time and should have known that his brother James C. was in Piatt Co. IL however. Family lore has it that WHHS had the body of his brother Francis Marion, who died at Andersonville Prison, exhumed and buried in Springbank Cemetery, but no record has been found of Francis being buried in Springbank.

Research still in process. Clearer picture requested to verify name and check for dates.
