Dora Grossman (1906-1921), my Great-Aunt, died at age 15 from leukemia and "General Anasarco," according to her death certificate. She was the daughter of Henry Grossman and his wife Fannie (née Kalchstein or Kalkstein) Grossman. When Dora died, according to her brother Arthur, her family never truly got over her death. She is buried, alone, in the Hungarian section of Cook County's Waldheim Jewish Cemetery, just outside of Chicago in the town of Forest Park.

There are no photos of her - only her death certificate exists. We do not even have a photo of her grave. Because her family was so poor, they did not have enough money for a tombstone, and she remains without one to this day, nearly a century after her tragic death. It is rumored that she had fiery red hair that was long, but this is just a family story and we have no confirmation.

May she always be remembered despite her short life, and may she always rest in peace.
