"John Alton, of Co. E, enrolled November 11, 1864 in Evansville Indiana by Corp. Blyth Hynes as a Private; mustered in November 11, 1864 in Evansville by Corp. Blyth Hynes at age 19. He was 5’ 10” tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. Born January 4, 1846 in Indiana, employed as a farmer, single, resident of Widner, in Knox Co., Indiana. Died of disease (int. fever and pneumonia) March 4, 1865 at Chattanooga, Tennessee with rank of Private.

Notes: Brother to Alfred Alton and son of William H. Alton, and Martha Jane Alton. Signed his name with an ‘X’. Substitute for David Delsey or Relsey.

In Hospital #1 in Chattanooga Feb. 26, 1865; died there. Buried Sec. G, Grave #490 (now 8680), National Cemetery, Chattanooga. Also headstone in Alton (Palmyra) Cemetery, Grave 1, in Vincennes, Knox Co., Indiana with Mar. 6, 1865 date."
