Joseph Davidson (1861-1903) came from Russia and settled in Newport, Rhode Island, one of the early Jews to settle there. He was the son and at least one of two sons of Isaac Davidson (1817-1912) and Dora (née Gittleson) Davidson (of whom nothing is known except for her maiden name). Joseph married German immigrant Bessie Schein in Haverhill, Massachusetts, on 30 July 1894, and he became a merchant in Newport.

Joseph died from what his death certificate says was "pulmonary haemorrhage" and "pulmonary tuberculosis" on 21 August 1903, and was buried in the Touro Synagogue Cemetery in Newport. He was my great-great grandfather Simon Davidson's younger brother; Simon was born in 1853. Joseph was survived, according to research done, by his brother, Simon, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, his wife Bessie, of Newport, Rhode Island, his father Isaac Davidson of Providence, Rhode Island. and three of his four children. They are:

Dorothy Elizabeth Davidson Hersey Brandon (1894-1987);
Irene Davidson Schneider (1897-1983);
Harry Lawrence Davidson (1899-1986).

Joseph and Bessie's son, who died as an infant, was Ralph Davidson (1896-1898).

The fate of Joseph's mother Dora is unknown as of this writing (updated May 2011).
