Jacob Grossman (1876-1914) was born in Tisza Derzs, Austria-Hungary, and came with his family to the United States in 1891. He moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he established a feed business and became a well-known local merchant. He married Mary Friedman (1886-1979), and together they had six children, all daughters: Helen, Ruth, Rose, Sylvia, Evelyn and Sadie.

On 23 August 1914, Jacob and his family went to Moosic Lake in Scranton for a day's enjoyment. Sadie Grossman went into the water, but could not swim. After a few seconds, she cried out for help, and her father rushed into the water to try to save his drowning daughter. Instead, both got caught under the waves and both drowned. Mary Grossman, who saw her husband and daughter die, had to be restrained from trying to help them, afterwards collapsing.

The funeral for Jacob and Sadie was quite sad, with many Jewish citizens from Scranton as well as people who frequented Jacob's feed business attending. He was buried in Scranton's Providence Jewish cemetery, where his father, Novtullah (Anglicized to Nathan) Grossman, who would die in 1922, would be laid to rest as well.

God bless Jacob, who was my great-grandfather's brother. Jacob left behind a widow who survived him by 65 years, as well as five children. He was also survived by his father, Novtullah ("Nathan") Grossman, who also lived in Scranton; his brother Morris Grossman, also of Scranton; his brother Henry Grossman, of Brooklyn, New York, who is my great-grandfather; his brother David Grossman, of California; and his sister, Kate Grossman Lehrman, who lived in Chicago and later Los Angeles, California.

Rest in peace, Jacob and Sadie. You are not forgotten.

Jacob and his wife were the parents of the following children:

Helen Grossman Rakir (1902-1987)
Rose Grossman Schwartz (1904-?)
Cecil Grossman (1906-c.1910)
Sadie Grossman (1906-1914)
Evelyn Grossman (1908-1985)
Ruth Grossman Davis (1910-2008)
Sylvia Grossman Greenwald (1912-2009)
