Former Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Chihuahua, México, Monsignor Adalberto Almeida y Merino was born on June 5, 1916, in Chihuahua and was ordained to the priesthood by Msgr. Guizar y Valencia at the age of 26 on April 24, 1943.

Aged 40, Almeida was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Tulancingo, Hidalgo, on May 28, 1956 by Pope Pius XII, receiving his episcopal consecration on the following August 15 from Bishop Justo Goizueta Gridilla OAR., assisted by Bishops José Alberto Llaguno Farias SJ., and Hilario Chávez Joya MNM.

On April 14, 1962, Bishop Almeida was transferred to the Diocese of Zacatecas and was later named as the Second Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Chihuahua, on August 24, 1969. He took possession of the Archdiocese on September 8, 1969.

The Archbishop resigned the pastoral government of his See at the age of 75 on June 24, 1991 at died at the venerable age of 92, on Saturday, June 21, 2008, at 6.30 am., after a long illness. His demise occurred due to pneumonia after suffering from bronchial respiratory failure.

The remains of Archbishop Adalberto, clad in Gothic liturgical vestments, were laid out in state inside the Cathedral of Chihuahua, where solemn funeral Mass was celebrated and where he was also interred during the evening of Monday, June 23.

On August 21, 2017, his successor for the see of Chihuahua, Msgr. Constancio Miranda Weckmann, initiated the cause for the beatification and canonization.
