Although John was too young to serve in the Civil War, he lived long enough to see 11 of his grandsons serve in the U.S. Armed Forces during WWII. One of his grandsons, Herman Rivers, was killed by Japanese forces on Guam.
Later a great grandson, John E. McDonald, was killed in action in Vietnam.
John lived on land previously owned by his father, William, and was almost 90 when he passed away in 1943.
Both John and his wife, Virginia Caroline are interred in the Cat Creek Primitive Baptist Cemetery in Cat Creek, Georgia on land donated to the church by his father, William.
