Parish priest of Paray-le-Monial, Cornet was appointed as Bishop of the Diocese of Le Puy-en-Velay, on March 2, 1978, receiving his episcopal consecration on the following April 23, Bishop Armand François M. Le Bourgeois CIM., assisted by Bishops Jean-Pierre-Georges Dozolme and Louis Antoine Marie Boffet, inside the Cathedral of Puy.
Aged 63, Msgr. Cornet was named Bishop of the Diocese of Meaux, taking possession of the see, on September 27, 1987.
Aumônier of the Sœurs du Saint Sacrement à la Mulatière of Lyon, president of the Commission Enfance Jeunesse for Scouts and Guides, member of the Permanent Council, member of the National Board for Vocations, and Aumônier International of the Vie Montante, Bishop Cornet retired from the pastoral government of his see on August 17, 1999.
He lived his last years at the Maison de Retraite des Prêtres du Puy at Brives-Charensac where he died aged 82 on September 11, 2006.
