Josephine Huskinson Smith of Rexburg dies at 85


REXBURG - Josephine Huskinson Smith, 85, wife of former Rexburg Mayor J. Fred Smith and mother of State Senator Kirk Smith, of Rexburg, died at her home here Friday night of causes incident to age.

Mrs. Smith was born Dec. 10, 1889 at Sugarhouse, Utah, the daughter of William James and Josephine Maria Garn Huskinson.

The family moved to Rexburg in 1900, where she attended public schools and the Ricks Academy.

She married J. Fred Smith on April 8, 1908 in the Salt Lake City, Utah, L.D.S. Temple. The couple homesteaded on the Rexburg Bench.

Mrs. Smith joined her husband in political work during his three terms as mayor of Rexburg and Regional Chairman of the State Republican Committee. The couple served as delegates to the 1952 Republican National Convention.

Mr. Smith died on April 9, 1958.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the LDS Church and served as Relief Society secretary. She and her husband worked as officiators at the Idaho Falls LDS Temple for seven years. She continued the work for 6 1/2 years after her husband's death.

Two daughters, Mrs. Marie Adregg and Mrs. Lucille Roylance, and two sons, Ross and Kenneth Guy, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, John H. Smith and Dick, both of Rexburg: two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Badger of Ogden, Utah, and Mrs. Luella Williams of Salt Lake City, Utah; a brother, Kenneth Huskinson of Rexburg and 15 grandchildren.

Services are planned at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Rexburg Stake Center, with Bishop Frank Jacobs of the Rexburg 4th LDS Ward officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Flamm Funeral Home and an hour before the service Tuesday at the stake center.

Burial will be in the Sugar City Cemetery.
