He was the paternal grandson Col. William Henry Haywood Sr. (1772-1779) and Charity Hare of Conecanarie, Halifax Co. (later Edgecombe Co.); and gr-grandson of John Haywood (1690-1758) a planter from Barbados who removed to Halifax County and married Mary "Lucy" Lovett in 1716. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson of "Raleigh Founder", Joel Lane (1740-1795) and Mary Hinton.
John attended UNC (class of 1825) and would later set up practice in Smithfield, Johnston County, NC. It was here he met his future wife. On May 15, 1832, 28-year old Dr. Haywood married 19-year old Hannah Hawkins Lockhart of Wake County. They would have 2 known children:
* Eliza Haywood (ca. 1829)
* Katie Smith Haywood (1833-1858)
The marriage was short-lived as Dr. Haywood died young in 1836 at age 32.
************
It must be noted here that the photograph of John's gravestone in City Cemetery seems to clearly read he died in 1856; but this is either a trick of the eye, or the stonemason got it wrong. John's death was announced in the March 8, 1836 edition of the Raleigh Register; and the Ernest Haywood Collection at UNC [Collection Number: 01290
Collection Title: Ernest Haywood Collection of Haywood Family Papers, 1752-1967] further indicate he was dead before 1850 when his widow had remarried. Lastly, the index of burials in City Cemetery [Shaw/Blunt Database Copyrighted 2008] further corroborates his death as 1836.

After Dr. Haywood died, his 35-year old widow, married (2nd) in May 1848 to the 51-year old widower, Col. Edward Yarborough, II, famous as proprietor of the legendary Yarborough House hotel in Raleigh. She came to the marriage with her daughter, Katie Smith Haywood; and Hannah and Col. Yarborough would have one child together:
* Hannah Yarborough (1850-1908)
Hannah Lockhart Haywood Yarborough would be widowed a 2nd time when Col. Edward Yarborough died in 1862. She survived him 21 years, passing in 1883 at age 69.
Both her surviving daughters married and had children.
