Stephen Haywood was born about 1772, one of 9 known children of Col. William Haywood Sr. and Charity Hare. He was raised on his father's plantation, Conecanarie, in Edgecombe County (now Halifax).

In 1796, at age 26, he married Elizabeth Lane, daughter of Joel Lane, founding father of Raleigh, NC. The couple would have two children: Benjaman Franklin Haywood (1802-1824) and Dr. John Lee (Leigh) Haywood (1804-1856), both buried here. His bride of 9 years, died in March 7, 1805, just a year after her son John's birth.

In 1809, at age 37, he married again to 27-year old Delia Hawkins, daughter of wealthy planter and landowner, Col. Philomen Hawkins, III and his wife, Lucy Davis. With Delia, he would have at least 5 known children: William Dallas Haywood (1810-1894), who later became Mayor of Raleigh; Margaret Craven Haywood (1812-1897), who married George Little; Lucinda Haywood (1813-1894), who married Sasser; Philomen H. Haywood (1817), U.S. Navy; and Sarah "Sallie" Blount Haywood (1822-1917) who never married and died in Raleigh at age 95.

Stephen Haywood died in Raleigh in 1824, at age 52. His wife, Delia Hawkins Haywood, remained a widow another 27 years, passing in 1851 at age 69. They are both buried in City Cemetery.
