Son of Karolina Sabat and Joseph Maliawsky who emigrated to the United States from Poland and Russia (now Belarus) in the early 20th century. There were five boys and three girls in the family. John was the 4th child and 2nd son. He was born in Shady Side, North Bergen Township, Hudson County, New Jersey. The 1920 US Federal Census shows the family living at 1219 River Road, Shady Side - directly across the Hudson River from Manhattan, New York City.

The children grew up during the Great Depression and the family was poor. About 1940, John went to work with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Montana and New Jersey (Stokes State Forest). In November 1942 during WWII, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was assigned to a base in southeast England. He was a military policeman (M.P.).

During his time in England, John met Eileen May Page of Woodbridge, Suffolk. On February 17, 1949, he returned to England (traveling as John Maliawsky) and they were married on February 26, 1949, in Deben, Suffolk. On March 9, 1949, John boarded the Queen Mary and returned to the USA. Eileen remained in England. The marriage ended in divorce in 1954.

In 1955, John married Irene Kaminska of Bayonne, New Jersey. They settled in Jersey City and John went to work for Western Electric. He did well and they purchased two small apartment buildings near Washington Square.

John and Irene had one daughter, Melodie Margaret Mary, a granddaughter Lindsay, and several pet dogs. They provided long-term assistance to an elderly tenant and shelter for a brother and sister who were orphaned. John's brother George also lived in the building in his final years.

John was the brother who looked out for the family in Jersey City.

He passed away suddenly at age 79. While standing in line to pay a water bill, he collapsed with a heart attack.

The family name is seen as Maliawsky and Maliawski. John's surname was modified to Maliawski while he was in the military during WWII. In 1949, he traveled to England under Maliawsky. His first marriage was as Maliawsky. By 1955 and his 2nd marriage, he is seen with Maliawski. He ordered his personal family tombstone to read Maliawski. His parents' tombstone in the same cemetery reads Maliawsky.
