Elks Conducted Final Rites For Lloyd Sharrock, County Coroner
Tuolumne County citizens paid final tribute to Lloyd Sharrock, Tuolumne County Coroner and Public Administrator, at funeral services held yesterday afternoon at the Burden chapel under the auspices of Sonoar [Sonora] Lodge No 1587 BPOE. Internment was held in the Sonora Odd Fellows Cemetery.
Sharrock was forty-five years old at the time of his death Friday morning. His brief illness of fifteen days and sudden death was a chock to the entire county. A native of Algerine where he was born September 26, 1898, Sharrock had resided in this county almost his entire life. His parents, George A Sharrock and Emma Estella Newcomb were pioneers of the community.
George Sharrock arrived with his parents in Tuolumne County from Texas as a boy of four years in 1852, His father mined on the Jackass Hill and knew both Mark Twain and the Gillis family intimately. He served as jailer under Sheriff McQuade. George Sharrock was constable in Sonora in 1880 and 1890 when he was elected without campaigning. Friends had proposed his name for the office while he was in the mountains for the summer with his cattle. He farmed on his Algerine ranch until his death.
Mrs Sharrock was born three miles east of Jamestown and lived in the county during her entire life. Her father was George Newcomb who worked at the San Francisco U S Mint before coming to Tuolumne County in the early 50's. Newcomb owned a ranch near Algerine which is known today as the old Newcomb ranch, now owned by Supervisor William Knoop.
After receiving his early schooling here Lloyd Sharrock studied embalming, receiving his license in 1922. He worked two and a half years for a Stockton firm. Since August 2, 1930 he has been connected with the C H Burden Company in Sonora. He was the first elected coroner and public administrator in August 1938.
He was a past noble grand of Sonora Lodge No 10, IOOF, Royal Prince of Aris Ahkeen Temple DOKK, a member of the Sonora elks Lodge, the Eureka Engine Company No 1 Sonora Fire Department and the local unit of the California State Guard.
Survivors include a brother, Warren L Sharrock of Jamestown, five nephews, two nieces and four cousins.
