In Loving Memory of Lafayette Saunders...

Son of Thomas "Tommy" Saunders (b. abt 1802 VA) and Jemina Teel (b. abt 1807 TN). Lafayette was most likely born in Perry County, Illinois. His stepmother was Martha Stage > Stone > Saunders > Crooker.

He married Sarah Montgomery who at the time was Sarah Cherry. Their children were Rosetta, Charles Weston, Albert William and Frances Jeanette "Nettie" Saunders.

Burial and death dates are unknown for this child:

-Rosetta (Saunders) Allen,
1880 Los Nietos, LA, CA census.
-Likely d. in LA, CA.
-Los Angeles County book 27, page 183: Rosetta Saunders, age 20 of Long Beach, married William Allen, age 27 of Texas on 21 Jan 1892.
-Mother Sarah's 1900 census says 3 of 4 children living. Other siblings were alive then, so it appears Rosetta died before 1900 census.
-Someone shared a family portrait of Lafayette, wife Sarah, children Nettie, Charlie, Albert and son-in-law William Allen. It appears to be a photo after Rosetta's funeral. The only date on the back is the age of Charlie, 19, so that would be about 1892 which is the same year that Rosetta Saunders and William Allen got married.

If any researchers have any information regarding Rosetta, please get in touch.

Civil War service

Lafayette Sanders fought for the Union. Enlisted as a Private on 23 May 1864 at age 18. Enlisted in Company D, 136th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 1 Jun 1864. Mustered Out Company D, 136th Infantry Regiment Illinois on 22 Oct 1864 at age 19.

Unless there were two Lafayette Sanders/Saunders in Perry County at the time that enlisted, this is him.
