Civil War Veteran, Company I, 142nd Pennsylvania Infantry

Martin Bookstore was born at Mersberg, in Baden Germany on November 11, 1826. Departed from his many friends and loved ones here on earth at 8:45 A.M. April 3, 1914; at the age of 87 years, 4 months and 22 days. At the age of 18 he joined the German Army, serving a term of 3 years. He then joined the Prussian forces who were in rebellion with Germany.
At the close of the war he went to Montreal, Canada, where he met his life partner Miss Sophia Frances Bussow and on Feb. 23, 1857 they were happily united in marriage in the Lutheran church. To this union were born seven children: four boys and three girls, six of whom are living. Martin, the oldest boy died in infancy at Montreal, Canada. Mr. John Bookstore and Mrs. Lena Smith of Seward, Kansas. Mrs. May deVoe near Judsonia; Mrs. M.L. Steadman, with whom the happy old couple have been making their home for the last seven years, where untiring and untired devotion was given them. Mr. Charles W. Bookstore of Haskell, Okla., and Mr. Harold Bookstore, St. John, Kansas. The latter two could not come to see their father.
He leaves a loving companion, six children, 18 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his loss. In 1860 he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1861 to Oil City, Penn. He served 3 years in the Union Army. In 1871 he moved to Kansas, living in that state 26 years, then moved to Clebourne County Ark., Heber Springs, where he lived for some time, moving to Judsonia in 1906. He has been an invalid for 6 years and in the years of affliction he kept a smiling face for those around him. The many visits of the old soldiers were a source of great pleasure during these few short years. He united with the M.E. Church at Prairie Hill, Kansas in 1885 and even through these years of affliction and confinement he found great joy in looking forward to meeting with his heavenly father in that home above where he often spoke of going, and was even anxious to cross over.
