Henry Butterfield was born March 14, 1759 in Groton,New London Cty, CT, son of John & Martha Butterfield. He married Rachel Thayer of Hardwick MA on Nov 20, 1783. Rachel died April 16, 1848. Henry is listed as living in Tompkins, Delaware County, NY in the 1820 census.

Henry enlisted at Westmoreland NH Jan 1778 under Capt Reynolds, Col Peabody, NH State troops. Then he went to Rhode Island and served under Generals Greene and Sullivan. He was discharged at Providence RI, but reenlisted from Keene, NH as a minuteman under Capt Blake, served at White River VT in pursuit of the Indians & was at the taking of Burgoyne's Army in Stillwater NY. During the Revolution, Henry lived in Westmoreland MA & Keene NH. After the war, he lived in Greenwich, WOrcester Cty, MA for about 30 years, then in Otsego Co NY for 10 or 11 years, ending up in Sidney Plains,NY.
