He was wounded on September 19, 1864 in Winchester, Virginia and discharged for wounds on May 16, 1865 in Philadelphia, PA. Massachusetts State Police Chief Constable Edward J. Jones appointed Oliver a state police deputy constable for Berkshire County in June of 1866. He resigned in December 1866. He married Josephine Cottrell from New York about 1870. In the 1880 Census he was living in Greenfield Township, Rooks County, Kansas and his occupation was “farmer.” In the 1900, 1910 and 1920 Census’s he was living in California. (Children: Lucy, John, Minnie and Robert) Oliver Cottrell died at age 77 on January 4, 1921 in Santa Rosa, California and is buried in Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery, San Rosa, CA.
