Last rites for Mrs. Judie Howerton Ardis, 75, wife of Lofton M. Ardis, prominent citizen of Mt. Lebanon, were held at the Baptist Church at that place Monday, the pastor, Rev. Selby Aswell, conducting the services. Burial was in the family plot in the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery under the direction of Conger Funeral Home of Arcadia. Mrs. Ardis throughout her life, had given to her church, her home, and her community earnest, steadfast and dependable service.
Born at the then family home in Claiborne Parish on Jan. 10, 1866, Mrs. Ardis was the second daughter of the late Judson Howerton, who removed to Mount Lebanon shortly after the Civil War. Educated in the local schools, Mrs. Ardis was married in 1891, her husband, L.M. Ardis, being the son of Capt. Casper N. Ardis and grandson of Matthias Ardis, both of whom were members of the South Carolina colony which had settled this village.
Mr. and Mrs. Ardis passed their golden wedding anniversary on last Oct. 20, but owing to the serious illness of both, no celebration of the event was possible. For years their plantation home has been noted for its hospitality.
Immediate relatives surviving the deceased are her husband, an invalid for several years; three daughters, Mrs. Vernon Culpepper of Shreveport, Mrs. Joseph Marsalis of Athens, and Miss Doll Ardis of Mount Lebanon; three grandchildren, Miss Dolly Culpepper, Gordon Ardis Marsalis, and James Egan Marsalis; a brother, S.E. Howerton of Mount Lebanon; and three sisters, Mrs. Lula Langford of Sibley, Mrs. Charles Murzbacher and Mrs. Ira Dance, both of Mt. Lebanon.
Pallbearers were R.H. Courtney, Melton Courtney, J.R. English, M.G. Key of Mount Lebanon, B.R. Felts of Arcadia, and Dr. C. Langford of Gibsland.
