The U.S.S. Hobson was built at the Charleston Navy Yard and commissioned shortly after the outbreak of WWII.

On April 26, 1952, while with the Destroyer Rodman and accompanying the Carrier Wasp on route to the Mediterranean on a recovery mission met her fate. A collision with the Carrier Wasp turned the Minesweeper Hobson over on its port side and split the Hobson in two when the wind suddenly changed. The Hobson sank within minutes. 176 sailors died out of a crew of 236 leaving 80 survivors.
