Novtullah Grossman was born in Tisza-Derzs, Austria-Hungary (now in Hungary), perhaps as early as 1835. (The 1910 US Census says that he was 75 at the time, meaning that he would have been born about 1835, and not 1853 as we had been led to believe.) He married his wife in Hungary, 15 December 1872.

He and his wife came to the United States in 1889, arriving at Castle Garden in New York (where his first name was changed to Nathan), and settled in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The father of approximately 10 children - of whom five are known - he was called "a gentleman" before his death in Scranton in 1922, when he would have been in his late eighties. He was buried near his son, Jacob Grossman, who preceded him in death in 1914.

According to The Scranton Tribune, in 1901 Novtullah asked to be divorced from his wife because she was a terrible cook and housekeeper. As of this date, 22 November 2009, it is not known if the divorce was finalized or what became of Ellen Grossman. An update will be posted once one is discovered.

[Update, 25 December 2010: We have just discovered that Novtullah married a third time after his marriage to Ellen ended about 1901; his third wife's name was Lena Kolstein, born about 1850, and that she was widowed before she married Novtullah. Lena died of bronchopneumonia in Chicago in 1916, and apparently was buried there. We will try to find any references to Lena and post them here and in a link to her gravesite, once that can be found.]

[Update, 16 November 2011: We have just been informed that Novtullah's wife, and by extension my great-great grandmother, was Hana Hubshman. She apparently died in Hungary prior to 1888, when Novtullah married Chia (Ellen) Klein, who came to America with him in 1891. Novtullah and Ellen divorced sometime around 1901, after which Ellen vanished without a trace. We will update as soon as new info on Hana (Hannah?) can be found.]

Novtullah and his wife were the parents of the following children (that we are aware of):

Morris Grossman (1873-1969)
Jacob Grossman (1876-1914)
Henry Grossman (1879-1951)
David Grossman (1879-1949)
Kate Grossman Lehrman (1879-1954)

According to Novtullah's obituary, he had two additional sons left behind in "Austria-Hungaria [sic]." We do not have any information on these two sons, their names, or what may have become of them. If any info is found, it will be posted here.
