Luverne was the son of Lyman Armfield and Sophia Stivarius. He graduated from the Milwaukee Technical College & University of Wisconsin with degress in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. He married first Dorothy Elizabeth Haertel in 1928 and they had one daughter, Laurel. He married second Edith May Helgeson and they had seven children.
