Civil war Union Army Soldier. Born of German immigrant parents, his original last name was "Kaebrieg". He served under that name during the Civil War as a Private in the Battery A, Pennsylvania Independent Volunteer Artillery (known as "Schaeffer's Battery'). He was mustered in on March 7, 1864, and was mustered out on June 30, 1865.
