Gerald T. Hammond, 93, formerly of 3618 Funk Road, Chambersburg, died at 6:08 PM Tuesday, August 12, 2008 in Chambersburg Hospital. He resided for the past 3 ½ years at Penn Hall with his dog Buddy, the first canine resident at the retirement center. Born July 28, 1915 in Honeytown, Letterkenny Township, PA, he was a son of the late Oscar Daniel and Emma Magee Hammond. A farmer for more than fifty years, he began farming with horses in 1938 and evolved to farming with tractors in the early 1940's. He operated Hammonddale Acres with his wife, Mabel and son, Ed. He was a noted Holstein-Friesen Dairyman and was well known for the cow sales which were held on his farm for more than twenty years. Gerald was an avid horse enthusiast all of his life and enjoyed driving draft horses and horseback riding. He had an appreciation for antique farm equipment, especially carriages and surreys. Gerald's favorite pastime was attending farm sales and auctions. He was a member for more than fifty years of the Chambersburg First Church of God. He served on the boards of the former Agway, Inc. and the Franklin County Cooperative Extension. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and the Cumberland Valley Antique Engine and Machinery Association. This past Saturday, Gerald and his canine companion Buddy spent 8 ½ hours riding a golf cart at the 2008 Cumberland Valley Antique Engine and Machinery show near Chambersburg. His beloved wife, Mabel Forrester Hammond, whom he married October 14, 1938, preceded him in death on August 26, 2000.

He is survived by two children, Eddy F. Hammond and wife Bonnie of Sevierville, TN and Lucille H. Carty and husband Clarence "Bud" of Chambersburg; six grandchildren, Eddy H. Hammond and wife Dina, Gene Hammond and wife Kelly, and Rick Hammond and wife Denise, all of Chambersburg, Elaine Icenogle and husband Dan of Seymour, TN, Mike Carty of Orlando, FL, and Beth Rinehart and husband J.D. of Smithsburg, MD; twelve great-grandchildren, Lauryn, Taylour, Hannah, and Gerald "Jerry" and wife Steph Hammond, all of Chambersburg, Travis Hammond and wife Ashley of Waynesboro, Tawnya, Blake, and Danielle Hammond, all of Chambersburg, Micah Icenogle of Seymour, TN, Stefan and Katarina Johansson and Justin Rinehart, all of Smithsburg, MD; three great-great-grandchildren, Aurori and Hayden Hammond of Chambersburg, and Madison Hammond of Waynesboro, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Gerald was affectionately known to some of his grandchildren as "Cowpap". The last of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, August 18, 2008 in the Chambersburg First Church of God, 2230 Grand Point Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Earl E. Mills and Chaplain Robert E. Keener will officiate. Interment will follow in Salem Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Sunday in Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, and one hour prior to the service on Monday in the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 2325 Country Road, Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Drive, both in Chambersburg, PA 17201, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
