My gt. gt. gt. grandfather Peter Giersch, Sr. his wife Mary Cicilia Giersch and their four oldest children John Peter, Stephen, Michael and Anna migrated to the United States sometime between 1844 and 1846. After arriving in America two more children, Frances and Peter Giersch Jr. were born.

According to the the 1850 Federal census of Wisconsin, Frances (age 4) and Peter Giersch Jr. (age 3) were born in Wisconsin. Peter, Sr. and his older four children were all born in Bautsch, Netherlands.

"Peter, his wife Mary Cecilia and their five children, John, Peter, Stephen, Michael, Anna, Peter Jr., and a nephew Mike Stearns arrived from St. Josepph, Missouri July 13, 1858 to the Salina Kansas area. The location where the family stopped for a few days was about five and one-half miles northeast of the new laid out town site of Salina, Kansas. The family came to this place in a covered wagon drawn by a team of oxen, with a mule tied to the wagon." (Frances did not appear in later census records with other family members so it appears he died either while in Wisconsin or in route to Kansas.)

"Peter Giersch, Sr., a blacksmith by trade, was one of the first to settle in the newly made town site of Salina, Kansas. During the war, soldiers brought their horses to him to be shod."

Peter was naturalized September 8, 1870 in Judge Humphrey's court, Salina, Kansas. A deed to Homestead 160 acres of land was issued the same day.

Peter's wife, Mary Cicilia died four years later, and was the first to be buried in the Peter Giersch, Sr. burial plot at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Salina. Peter died in 1885, and is buried there as well.

The above information was taken from an extensive Giersch history researched by Sister Crescentia Giersch, grandaughter of Stephen Giersch, and daughter of Peter Theodore Giersch. Sister Crescentia was of the Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph. After passing her wonderful Giersch history on to future generations in 1976 Sister Crescentia passed away Nov. 12, 1977. I was fortunate enough to inherit a copy of her work, and will be happy to share further information with others.
