As a young boy, Nicholas, emigrated from Germany to America, and the family settled in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Nicholas' father was a Liquor Merchant, and after his father's early death in 1871, he took over the business along with his married sister, Margaret (Kate) Henniges and her husband, Frank Henniges.
He married Caroline (Lena) and to this union one son was bor, Frank.
