COMMEMORATIVE BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD OF ULSTER COUNTY,...Page 1278:
Abram Elmendorf, who has made farming his life work, and is now successfully engaged in that pursuit, is one of the native sons of Ulster county, his birth having occurred January 22, 1865, in the village of Hurley. He is the eldest son of John A. and Ruth (Lounsbery) Elmendorf, the latter a daughter of John and Sarah (Peters) Lounsbery, of Stone Ridge. In the family of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Elmendorf were three children, the daughter, Sarah L., born in 1867, and Richard in 1875; they are still living with the father. The mother departed this life December 16, 1884.
Under the parental roof our subject spent the days of his childhood, and early became familiar with the duties and labors of the farm, working in the fields through the summer months and attending the public schools through the winter season. To his father he continued to give the benefit of his services until his marriage, on October 12, 1887, to Miss Catherine Sheriger, daughter of Edmund and Eliza Sheriger, of Dutchess county, N. Y. The young couple began their domestic life in the house where they still reside, and Mrs. Elmendorf is successfully carrying on agricultural pursuits, the well-cultivated fields and neat appearance of his place indicating his careful supervision. He is a wide-awake, energetic business man, and thoroughly reliable in all things. In politics Mr. Elmendorf is a stalwart Republican, as are all his family, and warmly advocates the principles of his party. He and his estimable wife hold membership with the Reformed Church of Hurley, in which he has served as deacon, and are active workers in its interests. He is numbered among the worthy citizens of the community, and it is with pleasure that we record his sketch.
