Private First Class, 2nd Mazowiecka Sapper Brigade based in Kazun. He was deployed with Poland's contingent of NATO forces serving in Afghanistan.
He was one of three Polish soldiers killed, along with another injured, when their Humvee struck a roadside bomb during a combat patrol about 20 km from their base in Ghazni province. The dead were later repatriated to Warsaw and each received a posthumous promotion in rank. In addition, each was awarded the Knight's Cross of the the Order of the Military Cross.
Pawel Szwed, aged 27, came from Garwolin and had over 5 years service in the military. He is survived by his parents Hanna and Richard, other family and fiancée Malvinas. His funeral was held August 26, 2008 at St. John the Baptist Church in Górzno near Garwolin.
About 1,200 Polish troops are currently deployed in Afghanistan and there have now been eight fatalities since 2001.
