William enlisted in Company C, 3rd Florida Regiment, CSA on 3 April 1861 in Brooksville, FL. He was captured in May 1864 and imprisoned at Rock Island, Illinois until paroled at the end of the war.

After his first wife died he remarried and moved from DeSoto County to Manatee County where he spent the rest of his life. According to the US Civil War Soldiers Records and Profiles he died on 7 May 1926, and the Florida Death Index also lists 1926 in Manatee County, which conflicts with the death date on his marker.
