A BIOGRAPHY OF JOHN CHURCHILL, by Laurence Overmire (8th great grandson), genealogist and family historian, updated August 2020:

John Churchill, was born in Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts in 1657, the son of immigrants John Churchill and Hannah Pontus.

John inherited land from his father at Mannonnett Ponds. He became constable in 1686 and he appears in some records as Sgt. John Churchill. He was probably in the local militia.

On December 28, 1686, at Plymouth, John married Rebecca Delano, the daughter of immigrants Phillippe de la Noue and Mary Pontus. Mary Pontus was also John's aunt, his mother's sister. Therefore, Rebecca was his first cousin.

John and Rebecca had 5 children:
1) Elizabeth (b. 7 Oct. 1687, m. Capt. Joel Ellis)
2) Rebecca (b. 29 Aug. 1689)
3) John Jr. (b. 20 Dec. 1691)
4) Sarah (b. 10 Feb. 1695)
5) Hannah (b. 27 Apr. 1697)

In 1688, John and Rebecca were admitted as members of the Plymouth Church and in 1689, John was admitted as a freeman.

Rebecca died in 1709. John married, secondly, Hannah (Padodie) Bartlett on March 4, 1715/16. She was the widow of Samuel Bartlett and the daughter of William Pabodie and Elizabeth Alden (a descendant of John Alden of the Mayflower).

John died in Plymouth, June 13, 1723, at the age of 66 and was laid to rest in Burial Hill.
