Pvt Xaver Braun, Co E 26th Wisconsin.
Resident of Fond du Lac
Musician; wounded at Gettysburg;
Killed in battle of Peach Tree Creek, Ga.
-Wisconsin Roster

Of course such a victory could not be obtained without the sacrifice of valuable lives and the shedding of precious blood, although our loss is slight in comparison with the loss and havoc that were inflicted on the rebels. The men and officers of the brigade sustained their well-earned reputation for bravery and gallantry. Though the attack came upon them unexpectedly, they met it with cool deterinination and unflinching courage. Where all behaved well it may be regarded as invidious to call attention to individuals, yet it seems to me that I cannot discharge my whole duty in this respect without pointing out for special commendation the conduct of the Twenty-sixth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry and its brave and able commander. The position of this regiment in the line was such that the brunt of the attack on this brigade fell upon it. The brave, skillful, and determined manner in which it met this attack, rolled back the onset, pressed forward in a countercharge, and drove back the enemy, could not be excelled by the troops in this or any other army, and is worthy of the highest commendation and praise. It is to be hoped that such conduct will be held up as an example for others, and will meet its appropriate reward. On the 21st of July the brigade held the ground and position occupied by it at the close of the battle of the 20th. On the night of that day the enemy retreated and withdrew behind their works, which covered and protected the city of Atlanta.
-from No. 268, Report of Col. James Woods, jr., One hundred and thirty-sixth New York Infantry, commanding Third Brigade. HDQRs. THIRD BRIG., THIRD Div., 20TH CORPS, Atlanta, Ga., September 23, 1864.

He was originally buried on the battlefield with other men of the 26th Wisconsin who died in the battle of Peach Tree Creek. Notes from one who removed the bodies to the National Cemetery:
1) At A J (Jackson) Collier's field NW of his house. SW corner of field north of the [Peach Tree] road. In the pine grove north side of field. 2) Were buried on A J Collier's farm in the field that lies west of the Peach Tree road; 200 yds southwest of the road & 400 yds NE of Colliers Mill on Little Peach Tree Creek.

First of all I want to thank you greatly for creating this memorial for Xaver. I've been searching for information for him for several years and finally tracked Marietta National Cemetery down after sending in for his pension file [filed under his mother Walpurga] at National Archives. I was pleasantly surprised to find that you have helped him and so many other soldiers not to be forgotten!

He was my great-great uncle, or I should say, brother to my great-great-grandmother Eliza Braun Hazard.

Could you link him to his parents Joseph (#67401410) and Walburga (#67401411)?

He was born in Germany. His family immigrated about 1850, landing first at Quebec and then migrating west to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The pension records show that at enlistment, Aug. 15, 1862, he was age 18. He served from Wisconsin in the Civil War along with his brother John. They were both wounded at Gettysburg.

His name should be left with the Braun spelling. A few of his brothers eventually changed their name spelling to Brown. However, the two letters he sent to his mother, March 14 and March 29, 1864, just four months before he was killed (letters in the pension file), are signed ‘Xaver Braun.'

I don't know if you transfer memorials or not, but I would also like to ask if you would consider transferring his memorial to me. Thanks so much for your help, and for what you've already done in creating this memorial.
