John Holland, a native of County Cork, Ireland, came to the United States in 1842 with his wife and children. During the stormy 11 week crossing, a son, Jeremiah, was born. They lived in Newport, Rhode Island until 1852 when they moved to Stephenson County, Illinois. John died in the cholera epidemic of 1854.
