Co I, 21st Infantry, SC Vols
Captured by Union forces at Morris Island, SC on July 10, 1863 where he was wounded. He was taken to the General Hospital on Hilton Head. "Conical ball entering left side, between 7th & 8th rib, passing through, breaking 6th & 8th rib right side, wounding right lung in battle." He died of his wounds on July 13, 1863 and was buried on July 14, 1863 at what is now Beaufort National Cemetery.

The 1850 census shows the "J" in his name as James, in 1860 it appears as John.
