The original site of the town (Greenfield, Indiana) included sixty acres and was donated to the county by Cornwall Meek, Benjamin Spillman and John Wingfield, as an inducement to the legislative committee to select this site for the county seat.
These first public buildings, as well as all of the first residences, were log houses built in the most primitive fashion. In 1830 the first frame dwelling house was built by Benjamin Spillman, one of the donors of the site. [History of Hancock County, Indiana, Its People, Industries and Institutions by George J.
