Andrew was the second child of Theodorus 'Dory' and Elizabeth Cooper Magruder who were married 27 Oct 1811 in Mason County, Kentucky. The family lived in Boone County, Kentucky until they moved to Hancock County, Indiana in the early 1830's. There, the spelling of the surname changed to McGruder. Andrew married Sarah Spilman, dau of Benjamin Spilman and Jane Bland Spilman, on 1 Sept. 1836. Their first child was born in Indiana. They started moving west with the families of Benjamin Spilman and his brother, Hezekiah Spilman. They were listed in Hancock County, Illinois in 1840. Hezekiah remained there, but Andrew and Sarah moved on and were early settlers of Marion County, Iowa in 1843. Benjamin and Jane joined them in about 1847. Andrew and Sarah had nine children, 8 being born in Iowa. After Sarah's death, Andrew married Mary McGrew Fry on 20 Dec 1876. The marriage was not a success and they were divorced before 1880.
