James was the son of Thomas Bloxom and Mary Ellen Bonner who later moved to Sherman, Texas. He was married to Mary E. Richardson of Montague County.

James was a stationary engineer for the Southern Ice Company in Sherman, Texas where he drown in a pit of water. They were the parents of four daughters: Myrtle, Margurite, Thelma and Ora.

His wife later remarried to William J. Cloer and died in 1974 in Sherman.
