Some of our records list Sister as Sister Justine or Sister Justina. I have also found her name before entering the convent as Ann, Anna, or Angela. In one spot the Angela is crossed out and Ann written above.

Anna entered the Benedictine community of St. Scholastica in Chicago , IL . In 1889, March 25, Feast of the Annunciation she along with two other sisters received the habit. She made her first vows in 1890 (not sure of the day) in Chicago . Her final vows were made in Nauvoo, May 31, 1895.

(I have found no record as to when (date wise) Sister transferred to St. Mary's Convent, Nauvoo, IL- between 1890-1895)

She was a member of the Order of St. Benedict for more than 55 years.

Funeral services were held at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on March 23, 1944 at 9:00 a.m. with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. L. C. Tholen officiating. Interment was in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery .

From some notes about Sister Justine: (My notes are in parenthesis)

Sister was a gem, a good religious, and a tireless worker. She was quiet and gentle but enjoyed what others had to say. For years Sister had charge of the girls' linen room in the Academy. (We had a girls boarding school in Nauvoo for 127 years.) She marked and mended the girls' clothes and fitted out the poor girls with nice dresses and coats. She was a fine seamstress. She also helped in the laundry. She taught sewing in a special class to the girls who wished to learn the art. For years Sister peeled vegetables; her hands were never free from stain.

This message was sent to me from: Sister Marilyn Roman, archivist at St. Mary Monastery, Rock Island , IL .

Appears on Sisters of St. Benedict Monument in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island IL.
