BROOKINGS – Peter Dominic “Pete” Torino, 63, died Sunday, July 26, 1998, in an airplane accident near Lead.
Peter Torino was born March 3, 1935, at Lead, where he attended school. He attended Black Hills State College.
On Aug. 27, 1954, he married Sandy Vaughn at Spearfish, where they lived until moving to Sioux Falls, where he taught at Washington High School and operated the municipal swimming pool.
They moved to Brookings in 1963. He worked as a gymnastics coach and instructor at South Dakota State University, and was trainer for university’s sports teams.
He was active in E.M.S. education and counseling education throughout the nation.
Peter and his wife owned and operated the Exchange pawn shop in Brookings, along with their son Steve.
His wife also died in the same accident on July 26, 1998.
He is survived by two sons; Pete of Rapid City, and Steve of Brookings; two grandchildren; his mother and step-father, Stella and Clarence Leeling of Lead; a brother, Gary Leeling of Burke, Va.; and two sisters; Patty Carr of Thornton, Colo., and Jeanette Fraser of Brandon.
