Between 1850 and '60, Isaac had moved with his parents to Stark County, Illinois, but by July 1861 he had returned to Ohio to enlist in the Union Army, just three months after the War of the Rebellion had begun.
Isaac died of disease and had initially been buried in the Southern Methodist graveyard at Summerville, WV; on 31 July 1867 he was reinterred in the newly established National Cemetery at Grafton.
In 1878, Isaac's mother Loana applied and received a pension for her son's Civil War service and sacrifice.
Note: One government record states that Isaac died on the 9th of December rather than the 8th.
