William Brown was born in Preble County, Ohio, April 7, 1848. Removed to Iowa in 1853. Was united in marriage with Mary J. Hallowell December 2, 1875. Of this union one daughter was born, Ella A. Smith, now of Washington State. Mary J. departed this life September 10, 1879.

He was again united in marriage with Martha Thompson January 13, 1881. Of this union three children were born, Emerson, Fred and Annie, she dying April [actually August] 25, 1885, thus leaving two sons and faithful companion to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father and husband.

Mr. Brown died August 15, 1907. He was known and loved by all the community. Quiet in manner, gentle in disposition, a man of strong faith in God and during the long and severe illness he never complained but patiently waited the end when he closed his eyes in death to open them in eternity. He will be greatly missed in the church and community but what is our loss is his gain, he is at rest.

The funeral services were conducted from the Cedar Church, by Rev. W.S. Knight assisted by Rev. Smith and Rev. Morris, Friday afternoon, August 16, and the large company that followed to the last resting place showed the esteem and respect in which was held.
