Harry Goldberg (1882-1920) came to America from what was called Russia/Poland (modern Poland) sometime at the beginning of the 20th century. The son of Philip Goldberg and Cina (née Siegel) Goldberg, Harry was a tailor who initially settled in Canada before moving to New York and marrying Mary Cohen, who came from the city of Kaunas, then in Poland and now in Lithuania. Harry and Mary had four children: Samuel Goldberg (1911-2001), Betty Goldberg Grossman (1912-2004), Morris Goldberg (1914-1929), and Nathan "Nat" Goldberg (1919-2002).

On 14 November 1920, while working in his barber shop and tailor shop at 515 Rockaway Avenue, Brooklyn, Harry suffered from an attack of what was later diagnosed as peritonitis as well as from a perforated gastric ulcer, and he collapsed and died in the street trying to get help for himself. He was just 38 years old. His widow was just 36 and spoke only Russian and Yiddish, and had to mend clothes and do other jobs to keep her family alive. She spent the remaining 49 years of her life a widow.

There are no photos of my great-grandfather Harry Goldberg - only that of his tombstone in Staten Island, which bears the wrong date of Harry's death: off by one day. He is remembered today through his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren that he never saw during his life. May he rest in peace.
